A quick look at GateLab, my native macOS IDE for open-source FPGA development, running with the Cologne Chip GateMate EVB:

▶️ Blinky example: build and program in a few clicks, no terminal
▶️ Live pin view via JTAG boundary scan: every I/O pin of the running FPGA, shown with the signal names from your design
▶️ Press a button on the board and watch it change in the app, in real time

No extra debug logic in the design, no logic analyzer, no probes. Just the JTAG port that's already there.
